Principal's Message

Hello Skycrest Families,

Welcome to the 2023-2024 school year!  I hope that everyone had a restful and enjoyable summer break.  With a new year ready to begin we are all filled with excitement and anticipation as to what this year will bring.

Our annual Meet and Greet is scheduled for Wednesday, August 9th. The staff and I look forward to welcoming all returning students and families and welcoming all new families to Skycrest.  TK and Gen Ed Kindergarten will have their orientation on August 9th at 10:00, we look forward to welcoming our new students to school.   Our 1st – 5th grade teachers will be out from 2:00 – 3:00 to meet students and welcome them to a new school year.  Kona Shaved Ice will also be here selling Shaved Ice to keep all students cool and enjoy a sweet treat!

The First Day of School is Thursday, August 10th, students will be dismissed at 2:05 PM.  It is quickly approaching, so please make note of start and end times.  Letters have been mailed home which include teacher assignments, with some teachers including a supply list.  Please follow the traffic map that is included, remembering to just drop off students when driving through.  If you need to get out remember to park the car.

Start and dismissal times are as followed:

Monday – Wednesday, Friday  - 8:55 – 3:20 PM

Thursday – 8:55 – 2:05 PM

Students who are not eating breakfast may not be on campus until 8:40, when supervision is available.  When they arrive they will go directly to the playground.

Attendance is KEY for student success!  Please support your student by working to be on time and at school everyday. Students miss out when they are absent, so work with us to ensure your child is at school every day and on time. A student who is not in school misses valuable instructional time with their teacher and peers.   We are planning various Attendance Boosters, Incentives and Spirit Weeks to help support our students be at school everyday.

Being on time means you are ready and in line at 8:55.  It does not mean being in the car line, or getting out of the car.  Help your child start their day off positively by being at school and on time!  Tardy slips will be issued starting  Monday, August 14th  to students who arrive after the bell.

Some helpful tips that will support you and your child to be on time:

  • Have clothes laid out and ready the night before

  • Have backpacks ready and set by the door the night before

  • Pack your snack and/or lunch the night before

  • Set alarms 5-10 minutes earlier

  • Leave with enough time to allow for traffic.

Whatever helps you to plan ahead and give you those extra minutes to help make the drop off easier and avoid the rush and crowds.  Remember if your child is late, they need to check into the office and get a tardy slip.

The staff and I have planned various events and activities for this school year and we need you, our Skycrest parents and families, to help us out by participating in these activities.  Class and School Volunteers are always welcomed at Skycrest!  To be a volunteer, you must follow the volunteer clearance procedures through the district.  You can check in with our secretary, Kady Gerolamy, if you have any questions.   We love parent volunteers and invite you to be a volunteer in the classroom, the playground or at any of our events.  We need Rec Aides to help with lunch supervision, if you are interested please see Ms. Rangel.  Rec Aide positions are available for both volunteering or paid positions; both full time – everyday 1-2 hours per day; part time, or on call basis.

We will be having our first Back to School Spirit Week the week of August 21 – 25.  Some fun dress up days are planned as we say good-bye to summer and HELLO to a new school year!

Mugs and Muffins will continue this year with our first meeting on Monday, August 21st. Mugs and Muffins is an opportunity for parents to meet with Ms. Rangel and receive and share information or concerns regarding Skycrest and the school year.  I look forward to meeting with families as we work together to provide a positive learning environment.

PTO needs YOU!  PTO meets monthly and needs parents to work with staff in providing a variety of activities, events, fundraisers, and supports for all our students. Check the Skycrest calendar or the Year At A Glance handout for the dates of meetings.

Character Education is an important trait for all students.  We will continue our focus on Character Education, and the District’s Social Justice Standards, as we work to support and develop a collaborative learning environment focused on academic success and equity for all our students and families.  School wide rules and guidelines are in place and will be reviewed with all students.  The staff and I ask for your support in following these rules and expectations as we work to further develop the outstanding Character of our Skycrest students. We also ask that all parents and adults who come onto the campus follow these rules.  The staff and I thank you in advance for your support.    Our schoolwide mantra is:

Be Respectful, Be Responsible, and Be Safe!

Parents don’t forget to mark your calendars and save the date for Back to School Night.  Back to School Night will be held on Wednesday, August 23.

3rd – 5th, and G5 and G7 teachers will present from 6:15 – 7:00PM.

TK/ K-2nd, and G6 and G8 teachers will present from 7:15 – 8:00 PM.

Information you will need throughout the year will be shared.  Be informed and attend this event to hear the plans and information for your child’s class and for this school year.

I look forward to working with you and your children throughout the year.
